Healthy eating habits start at home and often at a very young age. It’s important to promote healthy choices with your children to show why—and how—a healthy lifestyle can be fun. We’ve got some tips to help you if you’ve got a picky eater on your hands:
Be a positive role model (yes, that means you, mom and dad).
The monkey-see, monkey-do behaviors in children also apply to our meal preferences! Take advantage of this by showing your willingness to try new foods and healthy eating choices.
Let them help when it comes to cooking.
Cooking is more than just the best time to talk about nutrition with your child. It also gives them a feeling of accomplishment and even makes them more willing to try the foods they help prepare!
Explain the benefits of eating certain foods.
By nature, kids won’t understand the connection between food and how they feel. Teaching our children about physical and emotional responses to certain foods or lack thereof will give them the tools to make good food decisions in the future.
Encourage open-mindedness when it comes to new foods.
The best advice we can give when dealing with picky eaters: don’t give up. Whether you are involving them in the meal decisions in the market or the kitchen, or making creative recipes to sneak in the veggies they need— everyone can find what works best for them!
