Michelle Obama Announces New Netflix Children’s Show Focused On Healthy Eating

Former first lady Michelle Obama announced Tuesday she is launching a new children’s show on Netflix entitled “Waffles + Mochi,” which will encourage healthy eating and cooking among youngsters and adults.

In posts on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, Obama said she was “beyond thrilled” to announce that the show will premiere on March 16. 

As part of the show’s pledge to helping families during the pandemic, Obama said the program will work with Partnership for a Healthier America to deliver fresh ingredients to families in need across the U.S. and “help kids build healthy habits and help families in need cook with fresh ingredients together at home.”

The show will focus on the two main characters, Waffles and Mochi, as they leave the Land of Frozen Food and “blast off on global ingredient missions, traveling to kitchens, restaurants, farms and homes all over the world.”

The program is produced by Higher Ground Productions, the production company owned by Obama and her husband, former President Barack Obama.

In 2010, Obama launched Let’s Move!, a public health campaign that strived to reduce childhood obesity and encourage a healthy lifestyle in children. On Tuesday, Obama described “Waffles + Mochi” as “an extension of my work to support children’s health as First Lady,” adding that she wished a program like this “had been around when my girls were young.” Last week, Obama announced she would release a new edition of her best-selling memoir “Becoming” for young readers. This special edition is adapted for children ages 10 and older and includes a special introduction for kids written by Obama. “Maybe it’ll open up new dialogues with your children or grandchildren,” said Obama, adding, “maybe you can use it as an opportunity to begin a book club with the young people you know or use it as an excuse to invite them into your existing book club.”

In 2018, the Obamas signed a multi-year agreement with Netflix. The first release by Higher Ground Productions was American Factory, which won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
