Every sport has a few legends who take that sport to new heights. Arnold Schwarzenegger is one such legend who completely changed the face of bodybuilding. He not only made bodybuilding world famous but also gave many guidelines to sculpt a great physique. Here are top 5 bodybuilding ideologies from Arnold which are applicable till date.
1) Work Your Brain As Hard As Your Muscles
Arnold is well-known for his visualization technique and it can simply take your workouts to the next level. Arnold said if you believe, truly believe that building a massive physique is possible, and you will surpass the limits of your body in every set. And this can actually help you grow bigger and stronger. Harness your mental image to take your physique to the next level.
“The mind always fails first, not the body. The secret is to make the mind work for you, not against you.” – Arnold
2) Shock Your Muscles (Bring Variation)
Muscle growth is essentially your body’s adaptation process from training. When you train your muscles, you stimulate it and they get bigger & stronger in order to survive. But over time your muscles also get used to of the training patterns and resist growth. That is where you need to shock them to force growth. Arnold used to mix training principles from different types of sports strongman, powerlifting and weightlifting in order to shock his muscles.
3) Eat Big To Get Big
Today’s generation is extremely obsessed with abs and so-called ‘lean bulking’ routines. In order to build more muscle, you have to eat more calories and this inevitably brings a little fat gain. Arnold never believed in staying all year round and gave dedicated months to bulking phase. Nobody except him can imagine how incredible he will appear on stage once he sheds off layers of fat. Hence, prioritise muscle growth during periods of bulking and forget abs for a while.
4) Train For The Pump
Arnold famously said “If there is no muscle pump, there is no muscle growth” and science confirms this. When you pump up your muscles you accumulate blood, nutrients and lactic acid in that region which is an anabolic environment for muscle hypertrophy. To achieve the ultimate pump you can employ a strong mind and muscle connection, perform reps to failure or even use blood flow restriction technique.
5) Prioritize Your Weakness
We all have some strong and weak muscle groups. And let’s face it, training our strong body part is an easy task and we enjoy it. The challenge is bringing up the lagging body parts. Arnold’s weakest muscle groups were his calves and he would often skip training them. He once cut all his pants into shorts to continuously remind himself of his weak calves and rigorously train them until they got buffed like the rest of his body. Similarly, if you have any weak muscle group it is good to train it first thing in the week and target it with more volume (number of sets) and frequency (number of times you train).
